Signs You Have Mice

Mice are small, quiet and mostly nocturnal, so the evidence usually arrives before the animal does. Droppings are the first and clearest sign — dark, about the size of a grain of rice and pointed at both ends, scattered wherever mice travel and feed. Look in the back of kitchen cabinets and pantries, along skirting boards, under sinks, in drawers and across the top of attic insulation.

Gnaw marks are next, and they are finer than a rat’s. Mice work on cardboard boxes, food packaging, paper, upholstery and cable insulation, leaving small shallow scrapes rather than deep bites. Chewed food packets in a cupboard are a reliable early warning.

Noise is the third sign: light, fast scratching or scuttling inside a wall cavity, above a ceiling or under a floor, most often shortly after the house goes quiet at night. Mice travel the same routes every night, and the sound tends to repeat in the same spot.

Along those routes you may find grease marks — faint dark smears where the oil in the fur rubs against a wall, joist or pipe. And finally nests: tightly packed balls of shredded paper, fabric, insulation and packaging tucked into a quiet void behind an appliance, in a wall cavity or in a storage box, usually with droppings and a musty ammonia smell close by.
